Never let a calendar date force a cutover before testing is actually complete. A port can be rescheduled. A day of missed customer calls cannot be undone.

  • Will my old system stay live while the new one is built and tested? If the answer involves disconnecting anything before the new system is proven, that's a hard cutover โ€” and a real risk of downtime.
  • What exactly gets tested before the numbers port, and who signs off on it? A provider with a real process can describe their pre-cutover checklist in detail. A vague answer usually means there isn't one.
  • What time of day does the port actually happen? A provider scheduling ports overnight or during your lowest call volume is planning for the risk. A provider who doesn't ask about your call patterns isn't.
  • Is someone from your team available and reachable during and after the cutover? Find out who you call at 8am on go-live day if something's not right, and confirm it's a real person who knows your system, not a general support queue.
  • What happens to fax lines, alarm lines, or other equipment on my old service? These are frequently forgotten in a migration plan and are exactly the kind of thing that causes a surprise outage days after everyone thought the switch was done.
